Story

As a family, we chose the Hyundai Ioniq 5 despite its lack of a rear window wiper. At first, we didn't think it would be a problem, but soon realized how much we missed having a clear rear view. Every time we drove in the rain, whether parking in town or cruising on the highway, we wished for this essential safety feature. This, along with the wishes of other Ioniq 5 drivers, led us to develop our own solution. After almost three years of prototyping and testing, we're excited to introduce our innovative, patent pending rear wiper, being compatible for the Ioniq 5, and soon for other applications and diverse brands.

Testing

The testing effort for the rear window wiper system GeckoWiper® 🦎 involved a two-year intensive practical test campaign on several cars with early engaged beta testers providing continuously feedback. This constant feedback loop allowed for progressive engineering enhancements aimed at achieving mass production quality of the GeckoWiper® 🦎 for the Kickstarter campaign. The testing encompassed a wide range of conditions, including cold and hot temperatures, dry and wet environments, storms, and high-speed motorway scenarios. Comprehensive climate testing ensured the wiper's durability across various weather conditions. The test campaign also focused on extending the battery's standby lifetime, successfully reaching around six months, thereby making recharging convenient for end customers worldwide. This rigorous testing regime ensures the system's performance, reliability, and user satisfaction, ultimately paving the way for a high-quality, mass-produced product, the GeckoWiper® 🦎.

Evolution

The development of the add-on rear window wiper system GeckoWiper® 🦎 began with creating the compact electronics to control the wiper remotely, integrating microcontrollers and motor drivers. Key system components, including a compact motor and built-in rechargeable battery, were selected for optimal performance. A low energy sleep mode was important to implement to conserve battery life by minimizing power consumption during inactivity. The mechanical design focused on a compact, sleek, and aerodynamic housing, with rigorous waterproofing measures. Reliable mounting techniques using both vacuum and magnets in parallel were validated through extensive testing, and the final design reached patent pending status. Iterative prototyping and comprehensive testing, including environmental and functional assessments, ensured the system's performance and durability, culminating in quality assurance protocols for the upcoming mass production.

Production Stage

The GeckoWiper® 🦎 system successfully completed several rounds of product iteration over 3 years, including design verification testing and reliability testing on component as well as system level. Mass production scaling approval has been completed via supplier qualification and consolidation, including PCBA electronics, motor qualification, magnet & vacuum pad qualification and housing parts. The supply chain is ready set-up for mass production and committed to ensure that all orders are shipped out by February 2025.

The shipping in February 2025 is primarily determined by the time required to produce and approve the costly mass production steel molds for the plastic injection-molded components of the GeckoWiper® 🦎 System. This process involves a production and approval period of 2 to 3 months, starting after the end of the Kickstarter campaign. As a benefit to our customers, the final parts will be made using industrial-grade injection molding parts, eliminating the need for 3D printing, which was used only during the prototyping phase to accelerate development.

Compatibility

GeckoWiper® 🦎is currently approved compatible for Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2021-2024).

However, the GeckoWiper® 🦎 team will soon expand the compatibility of the add-on rear window wiper also for other brands, such as Tesla Y, Tesla 3, Tesla S, Polestar, Genisis GV60 Kia EV6, and even outside the car industry. The release process covers multiple parameters, starting from blade and arm size, to compression force, angle range, magnet positioning testing and most importantly practical testing.
